In July, Austin PPA hosted our monthly meeting and welcomed speaker Matt Nicolosi. This was Matt's first time in front of a group of photographers and we were all completely blown away by his program. Matt's program "Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary" was the perfect inspirational program for July! A mid-year-picker-upper that we all needed. Filled with hilarious images and insight from his humble photography beginning to his beautiful pieces of art and portrait work he has created since becoming a professional. His program stressed the importance of photographing for yourself... not just your clients. He showed us how his personal work adds creativity to his portrait business. In June 2010, top wedding photography team, David and Luke Edmonson, came to share their studio practices and showed us how they continue to stay in the high end wedding business. David and Luke gave an inspiring and touching program where they shared their philosophies, their style, and their secrets to success with million dollar weddings.

Just some of their advice for success:
1.Call - don't email: And better yet, go visit them in person. You're investing in a relationship with these people and it helps to hear a voice or see a face. It's also a lot easier to ignore or say no to an email. So, pick up the phone and introduce yourself. Ask if there's a time you can stop by to meet them in person. Remember, these people are very busy so just popping in to say hello and expecting a sit-down meeting may not be the best idea. As we like to say, warm relationships are better than cold calls.

2.Be Patient: Just like any of your other non-familial relationships, you had to build them to where they are today. Relationships don't happen over night, you have to be patient. The wedding coordinator needs to appreciate your work, observe your level of professionalism and understand that you aren't going to be a pain in their you know what. A bride is full of anxiety which a lot of times gets transferred to their wedding coordinator. The last thing these people want is some new photographer causing them more anxiety. So be patient and be helpful when you can.
3.Manage Your Expectations: You can't expect that you're going to walk into a wedding coordinators office, say hello, and then automatically be added to their go-to list of photographers. You aren't going to replace their top photography team - at least not right away. Again, you'll need to build trust with the wedding coordinators and work your way into their good graces.
4.Their approach to photographers: When you ask coordinators their general opinion about wedding photography to them all photographers are the same. They figure we all charge the same, shoot the same styles, offer the same products. Of course we know this not to be true but we have to show them what is different about our client experience and our personalities first. Figure out how to provide the coordination service with something unique that they can offer to their clients that will give their brides an experience they will never forget and you are on the right track.
5.Relationship needs to be organic: When you shoot a wedding and do a great job don't forget about the other vendors that helped make the day a huge success. Ask a florist while they are loading in - what do they really need to walk away with to sell future clients on ideas and concepts. What does the lighting team, set designers, make-up artist etc need to help their business grow. It's not always the kinds of shots that will make it in the couple's "book" but unlike couples the vendors in your area are in the wedding business long-term. Meeting their specific needs by asking instead of assuming can set you apart.

MAY 2010 : AUSTIN PPA'S ANNUAL PRINT COMPETITION

On May 16th, Austin PPA hosted our annual Print Competition in Lakeway, Texas. Our members were treated to a wonderful spread by the catering company, An Affair To Remember, located in Austin. Our panel judges for the event were PPA Master Photographers; Elizabeth Homan, Ross Benton and Cary Garrison. A big thank you goes out to our judges for giving up their Sunday to help our members learn, grow and get ready for print competition in Kerrville this Summer.

The day's winners were: Maria Bernal (Highest Print Case), Jack Puryear (2nd Highest Print Case) and Dianna Lynn Walker (3rd Highest Print Case). Maria Bernal also won Best of Show, 1st place Wedding, 1st place Portrait, 2nd place Portrait and 3rd place Illustrative, with one of her prints winning a Judge's Choice ribbon. Dianna Walker also received a 1st place in the Illustrative category as well as a Judge's Choice ribbon. Nathan Johns was awarded 2nd place for his Illustrative Portrait which also received a Judge's Choice ribbon. Wayne Solum won 3rd place for his entry into the Portrait category.

APRIL 2010 with RICHARD STURDEVANT

Austin PPA hosted Richard Sturdevant at our April 2010 meeting. Richard's program was filled with tips on how to not only sell beautiful collage portraits to your clients but also how he turns some of his client work into amazing merit prints... prints that look like they are from a dream world. MARCH 2010 - Carrell Grigsby at Austin PPA!

Carrell, who just recently received her Masters of Photography from PPA (Professional Photographers of America), showed all in attendance the importance of building our background libraries. AUSTIN PPA is so excited to announce Austin PPA's new home for 2010! We were able to sign a contract with Dave & Buster's at 183/Mopac for all of our regular meetings this coming year! The food is awesome! The wait staff is fast and courteous and the space is larger than what we have been used to for the past umpteen years! Not to mention that maybe our non-photographer spouses may just want to come with for a meeting or two or three...
